Description

Embark on a captivating journey to the splendid Rundale Palace, located just over an hour south of Riga. This magnificent palace, built in the 18th century for the Duke of Courland, is a true gem of Baroque and Rococo architecture. During this full-day tour, you will have ample time to immerse yourself in the palace’s grandeur, explore the Versailles-inspired gardens, and savor lunch at a local restaurant (at your own expense). Additionally, your adventure includes a visit to the enchanting Bauska Castle, a fairy-tale fortress nestled amidst picturesque scenery.

Your day commences with a visit to Rundale Palace, a jewel of the Zemgale Plains in southern Latvia. Constructed between 1736 and 1740, the palace was designed by the esteemed Russian court architect, Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli. It served as a summer residence for Ernst Johann Biron, Duke of Courland, and a beloved of the Russian Empress Anna Ioannovna. As you tour the palace, soak in its opulent highlights and the architectural mastery that distinguishes it as one of Latvia’s prime Baroque and Rococo monuments.

Following lunch, your journey continues to the captivating Bauska Castle. Situated between the Musa and Memele Rivers, near the confluence where they form the Lielupe, this castle comprises two distinct parts. The older section dates back to the mid-15th century when it was built by the Livonian Order, now only its ruins remain. The newer section, built in the late 16th century, served as the residence of the Dukes of Courland.

At the end of this unforgettable day, you’ll return to Riga. Please note that while this tour is accessible to most travelers, a moderate level of physical fitness is recommended. Additionally, it’s a small-group tour, allowing for a personalized experience where you can fully appreciate the beauty and history of these remarkable castles.
